AF-P lenses do not work with D70. AF-P lenses have built-in motor but the D70 body lacks the electronics needed to operate this type of lenses. That's what I s posted above. Another thing is the communication between the lens and the camera body. Remove the lens, look at the contacts on both the camera and the lens. The all should be shiny. Clean with alcohol and QTip if necessary. See page 14 of your manual for attaching instructions.
Take the lens off of your camera. Put the lens in MF mode. Twist the FOCUS ring (the tip of the lens) all the way to one side (extend it). You may hear a click noise or two, this is good, but don't FORCE the lens. Twist the FOCUS ring all the way to the opposite side (retract it). Again, you may hear a couple of clicking noises.

I just bought a Nikon D3300 from a guy from eBay. (Actually not eBay, but a Dutch website, same concept). It came with 3 lenses: an 18-55mm kit lens, a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3, and a 50mm f/1.8 lens, all containing autofocus motors. As soon as I reach past 50mm in the zoom range, the camera stops autofocusing completely.
